Iowa’s Upper Wapsi Wildlife Area Is Now The Perfect Place To Observe Wildlife

Upper Waspi Wildlife Area in Iowa is a restored natural haven perfect for birdwatching and observing diverse wildlife.

Iowa is full of great state parks and forests, but many of them slip under the radar of all but the most dedicated nature-lovers. One example is the Upper Waspi Wildlife Area, a small nature preserve in the middle of rural Chickasaw County. Extensive work has recently been done on the area, which can be found just north of Iowa Highway 346, and it's now been returned to a mix of the wetlands and prairie that used to make up the area. And it's not just the local plants and timber that have returned - the wildlife is back as well. That makes this one of the best places in the entire state to observe birds, fish, amphibians, and small mammals in their natural habitat. Birdwatchers and anglers will no doubt be on their way soon, as well, so this is the perfect time to enjoy this peaceful haven for yourself!

A unique mix of wetlands and prairie, the Upper Waspi Wildlife Area is a true natural haven for wildlife watchers to explore.

The entire area has been heavily seeded with native plants like this western prairie fringed orchid, making for beautiful hikes.

It might soon be one of the most intriguing spots in the space for bird-watching, with many species like this great egret calling it home.

As there are rivers running through the area, you can expect to see many small animals like frogs by the waterside.

The water will be stocked with dozens of species of fish, including largemouth bass and some protected species like the Topeka shiner.

In total, it's believed the Chickasaw area has 51 distinct species of animals living within its boundaries, which means every visit is a surprise.

Exploring it is an adventure every time, and the best time to start is during summer in Iowa!
