4 Underrated Hikes in Iowa That Rival Those of a National Forest
These four state forest hikes in Iowa rival those you might find in a national forest. You'll find deep woods, rugged terrain, and beautiful views of the Hawkeye State on these trails.
The Hawkeye State is fortunate enough to host four National Park Service units: Effigy Mounds National Monument; Herbert Hoover National Historic Site; and portions of two national historic trails—the Lewis and Clark and the Mormon Pioneer. We're also home to seven designated national wildlife refuges.
Strangely, though, Iowa is one of only a few states without either a national forest or a national grassland. I think this is a true shame, because we have some truly stellar natural areas that easily rival those you'll find in spots like Shawnee National Forest in Illinois or the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest in Nebraska. Here are four fantastic Iowa hikes to prove it.
1. Paint Creek Loop, Yellow River State Forest - Allamakee County
The Paint Creek Loop in the Paint Creek Unit of the Yellow River State Forest is a moderately challenging 6.9-mile hike through dense forest and along limestone rock formations, similar to the terrain you'll find in the Shawnee National Forest of southern Illinois. It's a beautiful hike for anyone who enjoys a little birding or trout fishing along the way, as well.
2. Preparation Canyon Route, Loess Hills State Forest - Monona County
The Preparation Canyon Route is one of the longer trails in the Loess Hills State Forest of southwestern Iowa. Designed as an overnight hike, this challenging 13.1-mile trail boasts nearly 1,600 feet of elevation gain over its course, which loops through the Preparation Canyon Unit of the forest, as well as the neighboring state park, which is also named for the canyon.
3. White Pine Hollow Loop, White Pine Hollow State Forest - Dubuque County
If you're looking for some truly rugged terrain with dramatic rock formations on a state forest hike, you'll definitely want to lace up your boots and head out on the moderately challenging, 3.2-mile White Pine Hollow Loop. The trail covers some of the White Pine Hollow State Forest's best features, and believe me when I tell you: It has many. The preserve is home to Iowa's largest remaining stand of white pines and, consequently, is National Park Service-designated national natural landmark.
4. Shimek Forest Trail, Shimek State Forest - Lee County
You'll find Shimek State Forest in the far southeastern corner of the state, not far from the Missouri border. What this patch of woods lacks in rugged topography, it makes up for in its sheer expanse of tree-covered terrain. The best way to get a taste of what this state forest has to offer is to head out for a hike on the moderately challenging, 4.1-mile Shimek Forest Trail. It's the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon of tree-bathing in our beautiful state.
Iowa's State Forests are Breathtaking

Iowa may not have any national forests, but these four hikes prove that our state forests give the national forests in our neighboring states a run for their money.
