Like everything, county parks vary in quality, but we think we've found the best family-friendly park in Iowa hiding right here in Urbandale. Walker Johnston Park is an incredible suburban retreat filled with hiking trails, sports courts, fountains, sculptures, and even two big surprises: one of the best old-fashioned playgrounds in Iowa for the little ones and an adrenaline-pumping skate park for teenagers. It's the perfect destination on a sunny summer day where everyone can play until the sun goes down.

Walker Johnston Park has a surprising number of attractions for a small county park! It's one of our favorite county parks in Iowa, and we think you'll agree once you get a good look at this hidden gem.

This well-maintained suburban hideaway is filled with beautiful fountains and sculptures everywhere you look.

The focus here is recreation, with popular pickleball and tennis courts for adults to engage in thrilling bouts.

Teens aren't always excited for a family outing - but they will be once they see this state-of-the-art skate park!

The crown jewel may be the fort-like tower playground, made of wood and perfect for active kids. There are also smaller playgrounds for the little ones.

While most of the park is developed, there are still some laid-back trails, including the 5.2-mile Colby Woods Trail.

This easy out-and-back trail is ideal for beginning hikers and has some beautiful paths along small waterways.
