For those who enjoy hunting, part of the appeal is the peace and quiet. The best hunting grounds in Iowa tend to be truly out-of-the-way places, where the animals outnumber the people. One perfect spot for hunting in Iowa - or simply enjoying nature - is South Skunk Wildlife Area, located in rural Jasper County. One of many new wildlife areas created, in part, through the work of the non-profit Pheasants Forever, this hidden gem was designated in 2022 and provides plenty of space for local flora to grow, local fauna to forage, and local hunters to beat the crowds. So step on in and discover why the South Skunk Wildlife Area is Iowa's best-kept secret - for now.
Jasper County is one of Iowa's most rural areas, so it's no surprise that it has some great natural gems.
The newest is South Skunk Wildlife Area, a large floodplain grassland that grew out of the area's 2008 floods. It is now managed by Pheasants Forever.
A true wilderness, it is an amazing place to see wildflowers when they're in season. Most people, however, will be here for other sights.
The wildlife area is home to many fields of grain like winter wheat, which means it attracts plenty of birds - and they attract hunters.
Quail are among the most common birds to see here, and many other migrating species can be seen making their way through. Even bald eagles are seen here periodically.
Pheasants, of course, are the big draw. And this new wildlife area offers habitat aplenty for these popular game birds.
