This Little-Known Scenic Spot In Iowa That Comes Alive With Color Come Fall

There are few times more beautiful in Iowa than fall foliage season, and it's in full swing. That means the race is on to find the perfect spots to observe it without running into half the population of Des Moines! I find that the county parks are always a hidden treasure when it comes to leaf-watching in Iowa. These local destinations are usually much smaller than the state parks but are well-maintained and packed with amenities that make them perfect, underrated destinations this time of year. A great example of this is Hickory Grove Park, located in the quiet town of Colo. A quiet city of under 900 people, about 45 miles northeast of Des Moines, it doesn't attract many tourists, which means its beautiful local park is the perfect spot to sit, reflect, and take in the season's beauty.

Hidden in the small city of Colo, Hickory Grove Park is a true hidden gem for nature lovers.

This is one of those well-maintained, sprawling county parks that makes a great destination for camping and water recreation during the summer.

As the colder weather settles in, it's less crowded - but even more beautiful, as Hickory Grove Lake is ringed by fall colors.

Take a boat out on the water, and you'll get to see the whole area in all its glory.

Hike into the woods, and the trees form a stunning canopy of orange, yellow, and red as the season builds to its peak.

Even if you just feel like a laid-back day picnicking in the park, you'll get to see plenty of the colorful trees without any effort.

Most people say the colors are at their peak as the sun goes down, making this the most beautiful spot in the rural haven of Colo.
