The Rugged And Remote Hiking Trail In Iowa That Is Well-Worth The Effort

Hiking is an amazing way to spend the summer, and Iowa is full of hiking trails that are perfect for all ages and all skill levels. These include boardwalk trails, city park hikes, and trails on campgrounds. The Paint Creek Unit Loop Trail is not one of those hikes. Located in Yellow River State Forest, a massive natural area in Iowa's Driftless Area, near Waterville, this 13.5-mile loop trail is considered one of Iowa's most challenging hikes. The trails are only lightly developed, with rugged terrain and few signs of civilization along the way. It also comes with some incredible views and is one of the most peaceful spots in all of Iowa, so it may not be for everyone - but it may just be the perfect adventure for an experienced hiker looking to see unspoiled Hawkeye State beauty. We were blown away by some of the views on this trail!

The Paint Creek Unit Loop trail has some of Iowa's most beautiful views - but you'll need some grit to get to them.

This 13.5-mile loop trail in Yellow River State Forest is one of Iowa's hardest, and you should expect uneven and rocky terrain.

Many of the areas pass by small bodies of water, which can become impassable in heavy rain.

Most areas are fairly unspoiled, but you will come across some old-fashioned bridges, as well as limited benches and signage.

As you walk the trails, you can expect to come across some beautiful limestone formations formed over millions of years.

The lack of development in this area means you'll get to see nature at its most unique and colorful on this trail.

The best time to walk the trail is April through October, but we're partial to the stunning fall foliage season!

This is a pretty extensive trek, so some hikers choose to take it slow and break it up with a night of backpack camping.
