Summer in Iowa is the perfect time to explore our state's beautiful parks and recreation areas, and the best thing about these free public attractions is that they're usually the same year after year—except when they're not. One city park in Des Moines has gotten a massive makeover, and the former Easter Lake Park is now the Athene North Shore Recreation Center. Billing itself as the most accessible park in Des Moines—and maybe the country—this unique destination is home to a bevy of land and water attractions designed to be enjoyed by everyone regardless of age or ability. The park just opened in spring 2024. Read on to discover how this lovely park has transformed Des Moines recreation!

Easter Lake has always been a big recreation spot in Des Moines, but the park has been given a complete makeover. It's all part of the Athene North Shore Recreation Area now, and the lake is open for swimming and fun on the beach when deemed safe. But that's just the start—as part of the park's outreach, it's organizing boat tours of the lake. In summers past, they have hosted veterans in the Des Moines area.

But the features on land are just as much fun. The new playground here is one of the most accessible and welcoming anywhere in the state. For those who don't want to go to the lake, there's a new splash pad that is the perfect place to cool off on a hot day. The trails in the park have been given a complete makeover, making them more even and accessible for anyone who wants to enjoy them.

The park also has a new event building that is available for rent, meaning you can easily arrange a private party here with all the activities in the recreation area at its heart! By all accounts, these renovations and upgrades have been a welcome addition to the community. Visitors appreciate not just the beauty of the park, but its ability to be enjoyed by all.
