Is there any more fascinating place in all of Iowa than Effigy Mounds National Monument? Every time I see pictures of this ancient landscape, where Iowa's earliest residents turned the ground itself into massive works of art, I want to go back and explore some new trails to see what I can discover. The good news is, the monument is full of small and charming trails that each hold a new adventure. One of the trails that not many people know about is Hanging Rock Trail, a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail that just might be the most enchanting hike in Iowa. A moderately challenging route with some uneven terrain, Hanging Rock Trail will take you through some stunningly beautiful views before arriving at one of the most magnificent views in the entire Hawkeye State.
Effigy Mounds is full of short trails and charming nooks, and it's time to explore one of the best.
Hanging Rock Trail is a 5.7-mile out-and-back trail that takes you to a stunning overlook, and through some of the state's most unique terrain.
If you haven't been to Effigy Mounts National Monument, you might be surprised by just how uneven the terrain is.
That's because this ground was shaped by prehistoric Native Americans, as long ago as 2,500 years in some places.
That makes hiking this moderately challenging trail a mysterious, enchanting experience unlike any other.
Keep an eye out for flora, fauna, and unique fungi along the way - this hike is relatively isolated, and you should have much of the trail to yourself.
It all concludes with an absolutely amazing view of the Mississippi River from high up - maybe one of the best views in all of Iowa.
