Sugar Bottom Recreation Area, located on the banks of the Iowa River and not far from Coralville lake, features a seven-mile hike that is ideal for adventurous types. This hidden trail in Iowa is considered a moderate hike and is full of surprises that anyone who braves the hike will delight in. The Sugar Bottom Trail is a 6.9-mile hike through the Sugar Bottom Recreation Area that is very off the beaten path.
While it's lightly traveled, it is well-marked and maps are available along the way.
Most of the terrain is easy to travel, with some bridges and boardwalks along the way, but bring a good pair of hiking boots for the rougher areas.
The mostly-flat terrain can be hiked any season of the year, and the woods look uniquely beautiful in the winter.
