Iowa's most popular and most beautiful lakes are always hopping - and that's both a blessing and a detriment if you're hoping to enjoy some peace and quiet on the water. Whether you're looking to go fishing, bird-watching, boating, or just relaxing by the shore, none of those things are exactly helped by large throngs of fellow visitors! That's why I always love finding a little-known lake in Iowa perfect for enjoying some peace and quiet - and there's a great one in DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. Well, sort of - DeSoto Lake is actually right on the western border, split halfway between Iowa and Nebraska. It also has a surprisingly fascinating history and is a great place to catch some fish or some rays. So come along with us and discover why DeSoto Lake should be your next back-to-nature getaway!
A perfect fishing lake in the western part of Iowa, stocked with game fish like catfish and bass, DeSoto Lake has a fascinating history.
It looks like a natural lake, but it's actually man-made - it used to be a simple bend in the Missouri River until the steamer Bertrand sank there in 1865.
The bend was widened and turned into a lake, and the remnants of the unfortunate ship can now be seen on display at a small museum at the wildlife reserve.
Today, this is a great laid-back location for fishing, hiking, or bird-watching.
A 1.6-mile loop trail is the best way to see the area, and it will take you along the shore of the lake.
It's an easy, paved trail, so just bring some comfortable shoes and enjoy the view!
The lake is even less crowded when winter settles in, making it a perfect time for nature-lovers to hike this area.
