The Little Known Hiking Path in Stephens State Forest, Iowa is Our Favorite First Hike of the Year

Lace up (or strap on) those snowshoes, skis, or snow boots, and let's head outside. It's winter in Iowa, and this is easily one of the best times of year for those who love the outdoors. I can hear you asking me, "Isn't it a bit cold?" Well, yes—but that's all part of the fun!

Snowshoeing is one of my favorite things to do in the winter, and Iowa is a great place for doing that. Snowshoers and cross-country skiers love the world of winter that comes to life each and every year at this time; the terrain is relatively level in many places, and in the surrounding forest, you'll find yourself immersed fully in a world that looks and feels like something a little more enchanting than simply "Iowa." Let's embark upon the amazing Whitebreast Unit Trail Loop, a winter adventure unlike any other.

Stephens State Forest is a fantastic place that plenty of Iowans love. It's equal parts beautiful and mysterious, with more than 30 miles of gorgeous trails weaving throughout. It's a 4-mile loop trail, so you'll return to the exact spot you started. Horseback riding is a popular pastime here, though in the winter it tends to slack off in favor of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. If you're one of those folks who are fond of an old-fashioned wintertime hike, this is the perfect place.

Along the way, you'll spot a few ponds and bodies of water that will probably be frozen over—but no worries. These little spots are ideal for ice fishing, so if you bring your gear, you never know what you might catch—even in the dead of winter.

The Whitebreast Unit Trail Loop is rated moderately difficult. It's very well-maintained, and I definitely recommend bringing along a good camera—it's intensely photogenic. From the snow-covered hills to a few climbs, it's a delight, and I think you will fall madly in love with it—just like I did.

Wildlife and bird watching are popular pastimes on this trail; year-round, you'll always discover someone (or something) living here. This is Iowa's largest state forest, and it's worth every single chilly step you take.
