Enjoy A Long Walk At This Underrated State Park In Iowa
For those who enjoy peaceful, laid-back hikes, Iowa might be one of the best spots around. We generally don't have the big, challenging hikes that other states do, so as long as you're in good shape and have the supplies, it's easy to spend the day hiking on a relaxing trail without having to worry too much about tricky terrain. One of the best spots for a long hike in Iowa is located in under-the-radar Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area, located in rural central Iowa northwest of Cedar Rapids. That's where you'll find the Pleasant Creek Lake Trail, an 8.3-mile loop trail around the park's stunning lake. It's considered a moderately challenging route, full of gorgeous scenery, and it's the perfect hike for a day-long adventure including a picnic and some sightseeing.
Pleasant Creek Lake Trail is a gorgeous hike for wildflower and water lovers, and at 8.3 miles, it's perfect for an extended adventure.
The hike is considered moderate, so expect to encounter some uneven terrain, but nothing too challenging. A good pair of hiking boots and a digital trail map should be all you need.
It's certainly a beautiful hike with some unexpected landmarks, and dogs are welcome as long as they're on a leash. Bring a camera and capture shots like this old-fashioned bridge!
The entire area has a wonderfully rustic feel as you get off the beaten path and explore.
Even better, there are some areas that feel like a beach in the middle of Iowa. Bring your water gear during warmer weather!
The trail is rarely too populated, but it's most popular during wildflower season - a gorgeous sight.
However, the trail is also a good winter hike. It's still fully accessible and uniquely peaceful when snow-covered.
