We all know that Iowa has some absolutely magnificent sunsets. At the end of each day, in any season, it's best to stop what you're doing and take it in. But did you know that there's really no better place than the Midwest to catch a beautiful sunrise? If you're an early riser, you've already seen what the morning light does to our wide-open skies. If not, we highly suggest you set your alarm for the wee hours tomorrow.
You won't find a bad place in the state to see the sun come up. However, we must admit there's truly something special about seeing the sunrise in the Altoona area.
Altoona is located in Polk County. It's part of the Des Moines metropolitan area, but there's nothing metropolitan about it.
While it's home to a couple of major attractions, like Adventureland and Prairie Meadows, this little city of 18,000 is largely quiet and peaceful.
The quality of life in Altoona is quite high, and it's easy to see why.
While the city has certainly enjoyed some economic growth and sees millions of visitors each year, at the end of the day, it's still a relaxing place to call home.
The days start early in Altoona, and not just for the people in the agricultural industry.
Many locals set their alarms early to rise with the sun.
First, the tell-tale colors spread over the sky. Then, the sun peeks over the horizon.
Thanks to all the wide-open spaces in this part of the state, the sun is easy to spot.
Before you know it, the entire sky is bathed in the soft morning light we all know and love.
The sunrise seems to happen pretty quickly. But if you savor it over a hot cup of coffee, it's the perfect slow morning ritual.
The summer and winter sunrises are equally stunning in Altoona.
Just make sure you check the predicted sunrise time before you set your alarm.
It's mornings like this that make us realize just how lucky we are to be Iowans.
With enough practice, you'll be a morning person in no time, and this can be a regular sight for you.
