Grab the Winter Coat for this Hike In Indiana that’s 100% Worth Braving the Cold
Hiking is one thing, but hiking in winter is a whole other thing. This hiking trail in Indiana is a true winter wonderland.
Indiana Dunes National Park is Indiana’s one and only national park (thus far), making it a popular pick for outdoorsy types in the Midwest. Of course, this means it’s usually ridiculously busy... in the summer, anyway. During the winter, however, Indiana Dunes is considerably quieter; it’s peaceful, though frigid, and makes for a wonderful time – even if one isn’t an enormous fan of the bitter cold.
Of course, there are things one can do to spite the bitter cold and go out anyway, like suiting up with quality hiking boots and a nice, thick winter coat designed for movement. One of my favorite brands for cold weather is The North Face, and I own the Women’s Arctic Bomber and I highly recommend it! Because winter in Indiana is amazing, and it's absolutely worth celebrating -- so long as you bundle up!
Enter Trail 9 at Indiana Dunes National Park: one of Indiana’s most legendary trails turns into an incredible winter wonderland yearly. I think you’ll fall head over heels in love with it. It’s truly breathtaking no matter when, but at this time of year, when covered in a layer of snow and decorated with a glaze of crystalline ice, it’s especially jaw-dropping. At just under four miles long, this trail is rated as moderate to challenging (depending on who you ask); if you decide not to stop at all, it should take about an hour and a half, though this can vary from hiker to hiker.
It’s an intense workout, but the epic vistas are worth it. The views of Lake Michigan are unmatched, and during the coldest time of year, it’s incredibly photogenic. Some evenings, it might be cold enough to spot some light pillars, and in many years, ice forms along the edges of the lake, occasionally being pushed to shore by the production of more ice and plenty of wind. Best of all, you’ll be nice and toasty while you kick back, rest your legs, and enjoy it.
The dune climb is, in my opinion, the most challenging part. Wear good shoes (also totally doable from The North Face), pack water (even when it’s chilly), and know what you’re getting into. I do recommend trekking poles, as these will help keep your balance along the way. Snowshoes are also a good idea.
It’s important to note that Indiana residents have a $7 per car entry fee (and it's $12 for out-of-state visitors.) You’ll park in the Nature Center parking lot; from there, it’s easy to find the trail.
