1. White River State Park
Covering more than 250 acres of Indianapolis, White River is not only a state park, but also one of the city’s six designated cultural districts. Featuring a beautiful canal where you can enjoy city views while on a pedal boat or kayak, this state park is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Indianapolis. 2. Monroe Lake State Recreation Area
Located just outside of Indiana University’s campus, this park features Monroe Lake, the largest body of water in Indiana. This park is a popular summertime hang out spot, as the lake is perfect for boating and fishing. The park even plays host to fishing tournaments throughout the summer. 3. Fort Harrison State Park
Known locally as Fort Ben, this state park occupies part of the former site of Fort Benjamin Harrison. Featuring an abundance of walking and hiking trails — and even one for horseback riding — as well as one of the city’s best 18-hole golf courses, Fort Harrison State Park has something for every outdoor enthusiast. Head here to enjoy a day of sun, fun, and natural beauty. Please note that this is a day-use park. The only overnight facilities are at the Fort Golf Resort, so plan accordingly.
4. Brown County State Park
You’ll have to travel about an hour outside of the city to get to this state park, but the short trip will be well worth it. Whether you’re looking to hike, fish, camp, or just enjoy a relaxing picnic, Brown County State Park has everything you need. The park has eight trails ranging from easy to rugged difficulty, as well as horseback riding trails and two large lakes perfect for a day of fishing.
5. McCormick's Creek State Park
Featuring 10 miles of fantastic hiking trails, McCormick's Creek State Park has some fantastic, picturesque views. You’ll find unique features like Wolf Cave and the Falls, oodles of hiking trails, as well as extensive campgrounds, both electric and primitive for any type of camping experience. The park also features a wonderful nature center that houses natural history exhibits and nature games which are perfect for the kids.
