The Farmer's Almanac just released its winter predictions for this upcoming cold season.

The Almanac claims about 80% accuracy, and this source of information has been vital to many people for almost two centuries - it was first published in 1818!

The Almanac bases its predictions on whether temperatures and precipitation will be above or below average for the region.

Their secret formula uses several sources to measure and predict weather patterns, including environmental factors, moon science, historic patterns, and even animal behavior!

And now for your 2018 winter predictions! Drum roll, please...

This winter is expected to be warmer than normal, which is good news to folks who remember the Polar Vortex from just a few years ago! Those -40-degree temperatures that kept us inside for days may not be plaguing us with such severity this season. Additionally, below average precipitation is predicted, but that doesn't mean it's going to be a dry season. A mix of rain and snow will mean a lot of slush.

The snowiest days are anticipated to occur in both mid and late December, as well as in early January and early February.

Dig out those boots before it's turkey time, just to play it safe.

The coldest periods are likely to be mid December, early January, and mid February.

You'll definitely need to bundle up for most of the season, but this winter shouldn't bring any Arctic temperatures or apocalyptic snow storms.

The rest of August will continue to be warm and stormy, which is normal, and September will be its regular mix of warm and cool temperatures that force you to carry around five layers of clothing at all times. You've been warned, Chicago.
