Hike the North Fork Trail in Illinois for an Unforgettable Adventure

Experience rural Illinois at its most beautiful on this enchanting hiking trail near Clinton.

DeWitt County, Illinois, is a quiet area with many things to do. Many of these things involve the great outdoors, which is (ahem) great because I'm hopelessly obsessed with nature and can't get enough of it. Spending time outside in Illinois is as close to paradise as one possibly can get, and I recommend it for just about everyone.

Clinton, Illinois, is a small town with a big heart. Here, you'll find the trailhead to one of my all-time favorite hikes in this region: the North Fork Trail, a nine-mile adventure that showcases some of the state's most wonderful sights.

To start your adventure, you must find the trailhead in the parking lot at North Fork Road. Park, grab some water, and lace up your hiking shoes—this will be a blast!

From there, you'll be led on a wonderful, delightful outing where you become well-acquainted with the beautiful Salt Creek. The sound of water flowing will accompany you for much of the adventure, and the birds singing will add an extra layer of wonder to the overall experience.

Deer, squirrels, beavers, and many other critters are commonly sighted on the trail, and if you're a fan of photography, this is a good one for wildlife photography. DeWitt County is truly a photographer's paradise, offering countless opportunities to shoot something amazing with every new twist and turn, and this particular trail is among my favorite ways to enjoy it.

Clinton Lake is a sight to behold, and as one of the most beautiful lakes in Illinois, it's 100% worthy of a day trip all on its own. Illinois is tragically underrated, honestly, and it's a shame that those of us already madly in love with the Midwest often need to explain ourselves when we say it's beautiful out here.

But it is beautiful - so very beautiful - and our hiking trails are an excellent way to experience it all firsthand.
