The Batavia Riverwalk is located between St. Charles and Aurora along the Fox River in the town from which it gets its namesake. The area is surrounded on three sides by water, making it a perfect spot for incredible views and great photos.
Typically, it is popular for its playground areas, shelters and picnic areas, paddle boats, and fishing, as well as both bicycling and walking paths. But in winter, the riverwalk area manifests a more magical attraction.
During the cold months (once conditions allow) Depot Pond becomes a natural ice skating rink. Batavia locals wait and watch for the green flag to rise, indicating it is safe to skate. This happens once the temperature is below zero degrees for several days.
When the red flag is raised, skating is a no-go. It means the ice isn't safe, and you could fall through. Brrr...
Peg Pond Center is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. when the green flag is up and serves as a warming house with restrooms.
The whole riverwalk transforms into a magical world of white in winter. Guests can still walk the trails, use play equipment, and explore other aspects of the area even when the pond is not fit for skating.
Keep your eye on the weather this winter for the coldest days in order to enjoy this natural ice skating rink.
