Swim at This Iconic Crystal Clear Swimming Hole in Illinois for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

Summer will be here before we know it, so add a trip to the crystal clear Lake Le-Aqua-Na for the ultimate outdoor fun in the sun.

The weather is heating up, the school year is winding down, and thoughts of summer activities are at the forefront of our minds. Summer will be here before we know it, and with that comes those hot, sticky days where we will need some relief. Have you started planning your summer adventures yet? Well, I have a suggestion to add to your ever-growing list: a day trip to Lake Le-Aqua-Na. This iconic, crystal clear swimming hole in Illinois is the place to be for ultimate outdoor fun in the sun.

Lake Le-Aqua-Na is the centerpiece of Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Recreation Area in Lena, Illinois. This pristine 715-acre state park is where you can experience a memorable summertime adventure, whether for horseback riding, biking, fishing, picnicking, going camping, or swimming. It serves as an ideal family destination for a day trip, a weekend getaway, or a week-long summer vacation.

The lake that's the namesake of this park is 40 acres with 1.4 miles of shoreline. The park's small beach is open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. On the hottest days during summer, it's best to get here early to secure a spot on the sand by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Le-Aqua-Na. Keep in mind, too, that there are no lifeguards on duty. If you have children with you, keep an eye on them as they swim.

If you prefer spending time on the water rather than in it, a boat launch is located by the park's concession stand. Only boats with electric motors are allowed on the water; you must bring your own boat or kayak, as there are no rentals in the park. If you enjoy fishing, this man-made lake has largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and bullhead, so bring your fishing gear!

For you hikers out there, the Lake Le-Aqua-Na Loop is a moderate 1.8-mile trail. Only a portion of the trail has lake views, and it also leads past the Pine Ridge Campground if you happen to be staying there. Pets are also allowed on this and any other park trail, but must remain on a leash.

The park also has two campgrounds, Hickory Hill and Pine Ridge, for those who enjoy camping. On the Explore More IL website, you can reserve an RV or tent campsite, perfect for a summertime family getaway to explore the park and swim the days away in one of Illinois' most iconic lakes.

Summers are made for adventures, and finding a place to cool off while having fun in the sun is the icing on the cake. Add a trip to Lake Le-Aqua-Na, an iconic, crystal clear lake in Illinois, to your summer bucket list this year.
