Autumn has officially arrived, bringing it with it all of the fun and the beauty of the season. However, fall means we’re also much closer to winter. The Farmers’ Almanac recently released its winter forecast for Illinois. If you’re a fan of cold and snow, you’re probably already counting down the days. If not, at least we have quite a bit of time to enjoy the still-beautiful weather.

The Farmers’ Almanac annually releases its winter forecast for the United States and for Canada. It is forecasting it will be “cold and very flaky” in Illinois during the 2020-2021 winter season.

For forecasting purposes, the almanac has divided the United States into seven zones. Illinois is in zone two, along with Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.

Snow doesn’t appear in the Farmers’ Almanac's forecast for the Great Lakes until the end of November. The first snowfall of the season is expected between November 16-19.

December kicks off with snow, with the almanac predicting Illinois will get between two and four inches in the first three days of the month. Unfortunately, a white Christmas isn’t in the forecast for 2020.

Be prepared to end 2020 on a cold note with a mixture of snow and rain. Rain and snow showers, in fact, are expected through January in the Great Lakes. No major storms are forecasted.

February is predicated to start with bitterly cold temperatures and snow while March follows with more rain than snow.
