Apple River Canyon State Park In Illinois Is So Hidden Most Locals Don’t Even Know About It

However, with all of those state parks, it's normal for some to get more attention than others. Apple River Canyon State Park in Illinois is one of those hidden gems you'll likely want to add to your outdoor bucket list.

Nestled in Northwest Illinois not too far from the Wisconsin border, Apple River Canyon State Park spans more than 1,900 acres in Apple River.

The beautiful state park earned its name from the Apple River and the canyons it created long ago. It's the perfect destination if you like spending time outdoors, hiking, and wildlife watching.

As you explore the park, keep an eye out for the many animals - rabbits, deer, and raccoons - that call it home. You might also catch sight of some of the 47 species of birds known to live in the park.

One of the best ways to explore Apple River Canyon State Park is to set off on one of its five picturesque hiking trails, such as Primrose Trail and Pine Ridge Trail.

Because you're hiking in a canyon area where there are bluffs, be sure to remain on the trails or you could get seriously hurt.

If you're planning to spend the day at the park, consider bringing along a picnic. Grab a table at one of the four picnic areas snuggled along the Apple River.
