Illinoisans will be able to see the next supermoon of the year on May 7, 2020. This full moon is expected to be the biggest and brightest of the year.
It will be visible from many places around the globe in addition to Illinois and is the third and final supermoon of the year. The next one will not occur until April 2021.
This full moon is known as the Flower Moon or Corn Planting Moon by Native Americans and signifies the beginning of spring and a general good time to plant or begin new things.
Native Americans had names for each of the full moons as a way to tell time before calendars. The moons were often named after the type of weather or what was to be planted or the type of animal that was in season.
This supermoon, in particular, is projected to be the brightest of the year as it will be closest to the Earth in its orbit this year.
A supermoon is already a full moon that is close to the Earth in its orbit, but this time it is expected to be extra close.
Similar full moon situations took place this year in March and April, though this will be the best yet. Be sure to mark your calendar if you're worried about forgetting.
Do not be surprised if the next full moon is giant and fills the sky. There's nothing out of the ordinary about this 2020 supermoon.
