This Ancient Cedar Grove Is One Of The Most Underrated Destinations In Idaho

Here in Idaho, we are blessed with some incredible forests. In fact, not only are some of these forests beautiful, but they also have quite a history as well. The DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove in northern Idaho is one of these breathtaking areas. With ancient western red cedar trees that are thousands of years old, beautiful picnic areas, and an enchanting hiking trail, this may be the most underrated destination in Idaho.

Northern Idaho is home to some of the most breathtaking landscapes. As I’ve lived across the Gem State, the panhandle offers some of my favorite views — views that made me fall in love with Idaho.

One of these picturesque areas is the stunning DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove, located along U.S. Highway 12 and just 12 miles from the Montana border. This ancient grove is the perfect day trip destination, especially if you want to admire Idaho’s stunning views and enjoy a little history as well.

The Devoto Memorial Cedar Grove is home to ancient western red cedar trees. These trees are giants, some towering up to 100 feet. Plus, some of these trees are more than 2,000 years old.

The ancient cedar grove is named after conservationist and historian Bernard DeVoto who camped in the area while working in the early 1900s, editing the “Journals of Lewis and Clark.”

Not only does this area take you a step back in time due to the age of the trees, but the Lewis and Clark expedition traveled through this area in the early 1800s on their way out West.

Today, there are multiple ways that you can enjoy this ancient cedar grove in Idaho. There are two picnic sites where you can bring a lunch and simply admire the beauty of the area.

There are also two short interpretive loop trails that take you through this ancient cedar grove. These trails not only provide views of these incredible trees but you’ll also catch glimpses of the Lochsa River as it travels through the forest. One trail is paved and wheelchair accessible.

The DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove in northern Idaho is delightful during the summer and fall months. The lush greenery creates a view that you will not want to leave.

Keep in mind that the grove is closed during the winter months and when open, it is free to visit.

For a day trip into nature, there is nothing like the DeVoto Memorial Cedar Grove in northern Idaho. The views, trails, and history will certainly make an impression. This is one hidden gem that you’ll be glad you discovered.
