I loved living in Idaho’s panhandle. This area of the state is home to countless hidden gems and natural wonders. While there are certainly bucket-list-worthy destinations like Lake Pend Oreille that you should visit and explore, there are also a few top-secret areas that not very many people know about. Gem Lake is one of these areas. This small lake requires a short, yet hard hike to visit but once you are there, you’ll never want to leave. It’s beautiful, quiet, and absolutely perfect.

Gem Lake in northern Idaho is the type of place that you want to keep quiet – it’s a hidden gem you don’t want to share. But, at the same time, you want everyone to know about this spectacular area.

However, many people will never set eyes on this lake in person as there is a 3.1-mile out-and-back hike you must conquer. The trail starts out easy but don’t be fooled — it’s going to challenge you in many ways. You will find the trailhead to Gem Lake at the end of Lightning Creek Road near Lunch Peak Lookout and Mount Pend Oreille.

As you begin this hike, it’s a fairly easy trek. Enjoy this portion of the trail and some of the gorgeous scenery that northern Idaho is known for.

Approximately 0.5 miles into the hike, you’ll notice the difficulty of this trail greatly increases. You will begin to climb and fortunately, there are switchbacks to help you conquer the inclines. In total, you will climb nearly 1,200 feet in elevation.

I recommend that you come prepared with proper hiking gear, plenty of water, and even tools like AllTrails+. The trail is overgrown in areas and quite rocky. You’ll want to come prepared for every step of the journey and having a downloaded map is wise so you don't become lost.

Once you reach Gem Lake, you’ll realize the hike was worth every step. The lake is surrounded by forests and mountains, creating a space where you'll feel like you’ve just escaped reality. Spend some time fishing, swimming, or even primitive camping at the lake before you begin the journey back home.

I also recommend you just stop and take in the beauty of the area. This is a little slice of heaven that not many people are willing to make the effort to enjoy.
