Rather, the journey is just as spectacular, and that’s the case with the Mesa Falls Scenic Byway in southern Idaho. This scenic drive takes you to the awe-inspiring Mesa Falls. While these waterfalls are certainly bucket-list-worthy, they are just one reason you’ll want to make the drive to see them.
Mesa Falls Scenic Byway in Idaho is one of 30 scenic byways in the Gem State. This drive isn’t long — only 28 miles — but it’s absolutely breathtaking.
This scenic drive is one you will want to take every spring, summer, and fall. The views during these seasons are inspiring. The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway does close during the winter due to heavy snowfall. However, you can still explore this road and reach the waterfalls via snowmobile.
This drive begins in the small town of Ashton on Idaho 47. You will then travel along Forest Service Route 294 until you reach the end at U.S. 20.
Both roads are paved and have two lanes, making this drive easy and beautiful.
As you continue your journey, get ready for incredible mountain views. You will travel through the heart of the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and will truly feel tucked away from the world.
You will pass unique attractions like Warm River, the smallest town in Idaho with a population of just three residents.
If you want to make a full weekend adventure out of this drive, there are two campgrounds you will drive by as well — Warm River Forest Service Campground and the Grand View Forest Service Campground.
And, of course, once you reach Mesa Falls, you’ll be blown away by its beauty. Spend some time hiking, picnicking, and just enjoying the views before you head back home. These are one of the most incredible natural wonders in Idaho and a mesmerizing sight to see.
