The One Thing To Do in Idaho Before the End of the Year

Looking for a year-end Idaho adventure? This stunning waterfall is quiet, peaceful, and absolutely gorgeous this time of the year.

Winter in Idaho is magical. When snow covers the ground and blankets the landscape, it creates a scene that brings a smile to your face and warmth to your heart. This year, the snow is a little delayed in southern Idaho (I’m still holding hope for a white Christmas), but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some wintry scenes. In fact, before the end of the year, regardless of whether snow has fallen or not, I recommend visiting Mesa Falls in southeastern Idaho, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state.

Just a short drive from both Ashton and Island Park, Mesa Falls actually consists of two separate waterfalls: Upper Mesa Falls and Lower Mesa Falls. These two falls are approximately one mile apart and certainly not small. In fact, Upper Mesa Falls is approximately 114 feet tall and 200 feet wide. Lower Mesa Falls is slightly smaller, measuring 65 feet tall and 90 feet wide.

During the summer months, Mesa Falls is a popular destination for visitors to southeastern Idaho. A drive along the gorgeous Mesa Falls Scenic Byway takes you to the falls, and a boardwalk and viewing platforms make it easy to admire this natural wonder. The nearby Mesa Falls Visitor Center also gives you a chance to learn more about these falls and the surrounding area—a worthy stop for every visitor.

In the winter, however, this area is a little bit different. When heavy snow falls and buries the road, gates are closed and the falls are no longer accessible by vehicle. Rather, you must put on your snowshoes or cross-country skis, or even hop on a snowmobile to ride up to the falls. However, this just means the falls are much more secluded, quiet, and peaceful. You may find you have the entire area to yourself—something that likely won’t happen during any other time of the year. Here, you can sit back and be still, appreciating some of Mother Nature’s frozen creations.

And if you time your visit just right, frozen is likely what you’ll find. The mist from the falls freezes, creating snowy winter scenes that are stunning. The forest surrounding the falls, when covered in snow, creates a winter wonderland that’s the definition of magical and creates a snowglobe-esque backdrop.

Because you will be spending quite some time outdoors on your journey to and from the falls, as well as your time near the natural feature, proper cold-weather gear is an absolute must. Also, make sure you are extra careful along the boardwalks and viewpoints as they can become extremely slippery. The visitor center does have limited hours and is open on select weekends during the winter months. Also, keep in mind that if you do plan to snowshoe or use cross-country skis on the groomed trails near Mesa Falls, you will need a Park N’ Ski Permit. You can learn more on the Idaho State Parks and Recreation website.

Even if heavy snow doesn’t happen before 2026 arrives, I still believe a visit to Mesa Falls, whether a hike or a drive, is a must for our bucket list. Time outside surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Idaho—there’s no better way to end the year.
