It's one thing to observe one of our state's waterfalls from afar, and another thing entirely to see it up close. This little-known trail lets you do just that. Leading you straight to edge of Lower Mesa Falls, this hike is a quick and easy adventure that you'll definitely remember. When you first think of Mesa Falls near Ashton, Idaho, this is probably the scene that comes to your mind. The Upper Falls are absolutely gorgeous and it's become one of the most iconic waterfalls in the state.
However, the Lower Falls are just as impressive. It may not be as popular as the Upper Falls, but this waterfall is just as worthy of your attention. You can even hike right up to the edge of it for an exhilarating experience unlike anything you've done before.
The little-known hike known as the Mesa Falls Nature Trail is a short and easy adventure that is perfect for any outdoor lover. You'll find the trailhead at the dirt road near the Upper Mesa Falls overflow parking lot.
The hike is nice and easy, leading you along a wide and well-maintained path. As you plug along, you'll witness incredible views of the river below, particularly Henry's Fork. The scenery is simply breathtaking.
The trail ends at a bluff that overlooks the top of Lower Mesa Falls. It's the perfect vantage point for taking in the waterfall and feeling the mist on your face. Especially during spring and summer, the waterfall is roaring with life and it's an astounding sight to see up close.
If you'd like, you can follow a trail from the plateau that leads down to the base of the Lower Falls. The trail can get pretty steep and there is some scrambling involved, so be sure to use caution. However, seeing the falls from this viewpoint is definitely rewarding!
