This Scenic Idaho Snowshoe Trail Is Perfect for Beginners

Winter is the most magical time to step outdoors and explore. Yes, it may be cold, and yes, you will need to bundle up and bring extra gear, but time outdoors during the winter months is beneficial for your mind, body, and overall well-being. Fortunately, here in Idaho, there are many different places and activities to get you outside and breathing in the crisp air. One of my personal favorites is a snowshoeing adventure, and the Sun Valley Snowshoe Loop is the perfect place to start.

Sun Valley is a popular winter destination in Idaho. While many people come to this mountain town to spend time on the slopes, I recommend you spend some time in snowshoes for a scenic adventure that isn’t too difficult but perfect for a winter afternoon.

The Sun Valley Snowshoe Loop isn’t challenging. In fact, it’s an ideal spot if you are just learning how to explore in snowshoes. You’ll find this trail at the Sun Valley Club, which is home to miles of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There is a per-person fee to access these trails, and if you don’t want the hassle of bringing your own snowshoes, equipment rental is available at the Club’s Nordic Center.

The Sun Valley Snowshoe Loop is a scenic loop trail with little elevation gain. It is approximately 3.2 miles, and because the trails here are groomed, you don’t have to worry about getting lost. The trails are quite easy to follow.

You will begin at the Sun Valley Club and head north before forming a large loop. Along your way, you’ll follow a creek, spot homes and neighborhoods, and enjoy golf course views. Along some areas of the trail, you’ll even enjoy winter wonderland scenery.

Because this is a popular snowshoe destination near Sun Valley, don’t be surprised to see others along your way—this is the perfect trail to enjoy with friends. And, if you wish, consider exploring one of the other snowshoe trails in the area, tackling a cross-country trail, or taking a ride on a fat bike. Please note that you cannot walk or snowshoe on any ski trails.

After you have completed your snowshoe adventure, I recommend heading to Konditorei in the Sun Valley Village for a fresh pastry and some hot chocolate, or warming up in the Sun Valley Lodge. Walk the hallways of this historic building and view the pictures of celebrities and influential individuals who’ve spent time in this Idaho community.
