The Marvelous 10-Mile Trail in Hawaii Leads Adventurers to a Little-Known Overlook

There is a little-known overlook in Hawaii that you need to hike! The Hilina Pali Overlook in Volcanoes National Park is one of the best hikes in Hawaii and one that deserves a spot on every hiker's bucket list. However, this trail is 10 miles but the views make every step well worth the mileage. Check out Hilina Pali Overlook the next time you're exploring the Big Island. You won't be disappointed!

If you’re on the Big Island and visiting Volcanoes National Park, the Hilina Pali Overlook is a wonderful place to stop. One of the lesser-known overlook trails in the Hawaiian islands, it offers stunning views of the ocean beyond. Plus, the entire trail is paved.

In fact, during certain parts of the year, the trail is open to car traffic, too. But if you visit when you can’t drive down to the overlook, walking this easy trail is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.

You can enjoy just a small portion of this hike to Hilina Pali Overlook or tackle the full thing. The trail is 10.2 miles long, out and back.

Because the trail is paved, it is perfect for walking, mountain biking, or even pushing a stroller. However, be aware that there are some inclines you will need to tackle. The entire elevation gain throughout your hike is around 1,100 feet.

It’s worth it though because the views of the 650-year-old lava fields are absolutely stunning. The lava has turned red from the iron exposure to the air and water over time.

While the landscape is pretty incredible, keep an eye out for wildlife as well. This hike is a fantastic place for birdwatching.

There’s not a lot of shade, so bring a hat and a water bottle with you to keep hydrated. You will also be required to pay the fee to enter Volcanoes National Park or you can purchase a National Parks Pass and use it to access the park as many times as you'd like throughout the year.

If you want some incredible views on the Big Island, make this overlook one of your stops. The easy, paved trail is a dream to hike, especially if the road isn't open. And the views at the end are worth it!
