5 Hawaii Hikes That Shine at Sunset
There's no better way to end a day in paradise.
There is no better way to end the day than watching the sunset, and here in Hawaii, you will find some of the most breathtaking skies. While there are countless places to watch this fiery show, I have found five hikes around the islands with stunning sunset views. Some of these hikes are long, others are short, family-friendly adventures, but all are guaranteed to provide awe-inspiring scenery.
1. Kapalua Coastal Trail, Maui
- Location: Lahaina, Maui
- Distance: 2.5 Miles
- Difficulty: Easy
One of our favorite family-friendly trails on Maui is the Kapalua Coastal Trail. This out-and-back trail takes you on a journey along the shore and offers beautiful sights no matter the time of day. You might want to bring your swimsuit and a towel — the ocean will tempt you!
2. Pololū Valley Lookout, Big Island
- Location: Near Kapaau, Hawaii
- Distance: 0.9 Miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
It doesn’t get much better than the views from the Pololū Valley Lookout Trail, and when you combine this trail with the black sand beach you visit along your way, this is a little slice of heaven. This trail has steep and rocky portions, so sturdy hiking shoes are a must.
3. Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail, Kauai
- Location: Koloa, Kauai
- Distance: 3.8 Miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
There are so many ways to enjoy the Mana’ulepu Heritage Trail. You can tackle the entire trail or just explore a small section and turn back around — we won’t judge! This trail on Kauai is flat, popular, and scenic — and don’t be surprised if you spot wildlife all along your way. It’s one Hawaii trail with sunset views you don’t want to miss.
4. Puʻu O Hulu Trail (Pink Pillbox Trail), Oahu
- Location: Near Waianae, Oahu
- Distance: 1.4 Miles
- Difficulty: Moderate
The Puʻu O Hulu Trail, better known as the Pink Pillbox Trail, is a popular hike on Oahu, and for good reason — it’s short and offers breathtaking city and ocean views. If you bring young children with you on this sunset hike, make sure you keep a close eye on them. Portions of the trail become quite narrow with steep drop-offs.
5. Tantalus Lookout, Oahu
- Location: Honolulu, Oahu
- Distance: 0.5 Miles
- Difficulty: Easy
The Tantalus Lookout Trail is more of a stroll than a strenuous hike. This out-and-back trail is approximately 0.5 miles and leads you to a gorgeous lookout where you can see Honolulu, Diamond Head, and more. The sunset views from here are incredible, and because the trail is so short, you don’t have to worry so much about your trek home.
