The 2-Mile Hiking Trail in Georgia That Is a Fall Foliage Wonderland
Popular year-round, Black Mountain State Park is a revelation in the fall. It's tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rabun County, Georgia, measuring just over 1,700 acres in size.
Hiking in Georgia is a year-round activity we cherish. Come fall, however, our enthusiasm knows no bounds. Cooler temperatures, crisp autumn air, and a palette of fall colors are just a few reasons to lace up your favorite hiking boots this season. If you're like us, you probably prefer trails that aren't too long and promise lots of scenery along the way. We're headed to Black Rock Mountain State Park — not necessarily a hidden gem but bucket-list-worthy nonetheless — to catch the seasonal view from Tennessee Mountain Trail.
Popular year-round, Black Mountain State Park is a revelation in the fall. It's tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rabun County, Georgia, measuring just over 1,700 acres in size. It also holds the distinction of being the highest state park in Georgia, resting atop the Eastern Continental Divide at 3,600 feet above sea level.
There's a $5 parking fee for visitors, a small price considering the treasure trove of amenities you'll find at the park. If it's your first visit, we'd recommend stepping into the visitor's center for trail maps, recommendations, and any reinforcements you may need in the way of snacks and water. There are also restrooms inside the building.
Now, it's time to experience what many agree is the best trail in the entire park. The Tennessee Rock Trail is well-maintained and easy to find with its bright yellow trail markers. It's a 2.3-mile loop with about 500 feet in elevation gain. The trail's terrain makes it ideal for a fall hike; you'll be mostly in the woods under a canopy of fall colors until reaching the summit.
The view is the trail's crown jewel, but the ascent is equally memorable. Hikers agree that this trail is moderately challenging, and because there are some roots and rocks along the way, you'll want to bring some sturdy hiking boots. If you're someone who appreciates having the view at the end of a trail, be sure to take the route counterclockwise. The ascent will be steeper but quicker, and your efforts will be rewarded with a spectacular view towards the end of your hike.
If you're in the mood to keep hiking after you finish the Tennessee Mountain Trail, we'd recommend trying the Black Rock Lake Trail. It's a short hike, measuring just 0.8 miles, and it's another way to appreciate the park's natural beauty. You might also consider camping at Black Rock Mountain State Park.
