There are dozens of reasons to catch a sunset in The Peach State. While they only last a few moments, they bring breathtaking beauty, a connection with nature, a sense of peace, and a dazzling closure to the day. I especially love seeing the brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red as the sun slips beneath the horizon; it's mesmerizing! Several Georgia hikes provide fantastic sunset vistas. We've found five hikes with some of the best sunset views in the state, ranging from shorter 1.3-mile trails to challenging 9.9-mile treks.

1. Indian Seats Loop, Cumming

The Indian Seats Loop trail is a moderately challenging 3.6-mile hike in the Sawnee Mountain Preserve near Cumming. It gains 515 feet in elevation, taking hikers through lush forests. Trail highlights include the Indian Seats rock formation and gorgeous panoramic views from the top. The trail is open year-round, and dogs are not allowed.

2. Brasstown Bald Trail, Young Harris

The Brasstown Bald Trail is a 1.3-mile out-and-back hike from a parking area to the Brasstown Bald Visitor Information Center. At 4,784 feet above sea level, the center is the highest site in Georgia, providing breathtaking views at any time of day, but especially at sunset. It is considered a moderately challenging hike, gaining 426 feet in elevation and with most of the trail over 12% grade. The area also has a picnic site, general store, observation deck, and natural science and history museum. The trail allows leashed dogs and is open year-round, although some amenities close during winter.

3. Lookout Mountain Bluff Trail, Lookout Mountain

The challenging Lookout Mountain Bluff Trail is a 9.2-mile out-and-back hike that gains 1,200 feet in elevation. It's part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. The path takes hikers northeast to Craven's House, the oldest building on Lookout Mountain and the former home of Robert Cravens, a 19th-century ironmaster. The Lookout Mountain Bluff Trail is open year-round, and leashed dogs are welcome.

4. Len Foote and Appalacian Approach Loop, Marble Hill

The Len Foote and Appalachian Approach Loop in Amicalola Falls State Park is a challenging 9.9-mile trail that takes about 5 hours to complete. The trail follows the Len Foote Trail from Amicocala Falls, a magnificent 729-foot waterfall, to the Appalachian Approach Trail. Hikers note the beautiful forests and creeks along the trail and the incredible panoramic views.

5. Stone Mountain Walk-Up Trail, Stone Mountain

The Stone Mountain Walk-Up Trail is a moderately challenging 2.2-mile out-and-back hike. The path takes visitors to the top of Stone Mountain, about 1600 feet above sea level. They can enjoy stunning 360-degree views of the downtown Atlanta skyline and mountains from the peak. The trail is open year-round and quite popular.
