Love Appalachian Trail? Try This Similar Spot in Georgia

Experience the Appalachian Trail’s beauty without the crowds on Georgia’s Bartram Trail.

Something you may not have known about me - I've always had a secret dream to tackle a thru-hike, either the Appalachian Trail (AT) or the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). There is something about the challenge here, the ability to survive minimally with nature and against nature, that is intriguing to me. But let's be honest, my dogs would miss me too much, and there is a lot of planning that would go into an adventure like this. So, whenever I'm feeling the itch to try, I start with a perfect Appalachian Trail dupe hike - The Bartram Trail. Just for clarification purposes:

  • Appalachian Trail: roughly 2,190 miles
  • Bartram Trail: roughly 116 miles

So you see why the latter sounds more appealing, right? That's not to say this isn't a tough hike, just because it's shorter. This one slice of the Bartram Trail that I highly recommend clocks in at over 35 miles, taking hikers through Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest with some incredible elevation changes.

The Bartram Trail follows the journey of famed naturalist William Bartram, who explored the American South in the 1770s. In Georgia, the trail stretches through the northeastern mountains, beginning near the Chattooga River and winding its way through the lush forests and ridges of Rabun County, eventually crossing into North Carolina.

The trail is a mix of forested solitude, fern-filled coves, and rocky cliffs. Hikers can experience everything from short out-and-back routes to fill a day's worth of adventure or multi-day backpacking trips. And while it’s not as long or famous as the AT, the Bartram Trail delivers just as much beauty and personal reward.

The Appalachian Trail, especially in Georgia’s Springer Mountain section, can feel like a hiker highway during peak season. The Bartram Trail, in contrast, remains blissfully uncrowded—ideal for those seeking true solitude or meditative hiking experiences.

One of the best aspects of this hike is the climb up Rabun Bald, Georgia’s second-highest peak. Via the Bartram Trail, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views—no parking battle, no trail congestion. The climb is challenging but manageable, and the payoff is stunning.

Not everyone has time (or knees!) for a thru-hike. The Bartram Trail offers shorter sections that are perfect for day hikes or weekend trips. Popular spots like Warwoman Dell and Becky Branch Falls make it easy to dip your toes into the experience without going all in.

Obviously, no matter the hike's length, you should always prepare accordingly. Even if a trail is well-marked, you still want to have a GPS or map for when service can be spotty. Also, since the weather in Georgia can shift drastically at times, make sure to pack for all conditions. And don't forget, leave no trace! Since this is a quieter trail, it's crucial to help keep it pristine.

If you’re yearning for the Appalachian Trail experience but aren’t ready to commit to the crowds or distance, the Bartram Trail is your ticket to quiet wilderness adventure. With its mix of history, heart, and natural splendor, it’s not just a substitute—it’s a destination all its own.
