Stroll Then Swim on This Lakefront Hike in Georgia That’s Perfect for Summer
Walk around one of Georgia's most stunning mountain lakes before cooling off in its refreshing waters. It's a summer combo made in heaven!
Summer in Georgia means beautiful weather tailor-made for hiking. But it also means extreme heat that will tempt you to spontaneously jump into the closest body of water. Fortunately, I've found a hike that checks both of these boxes. Today, we're headed into Chattahoochee National Forest to spend some quality time near one of the state's most beautiful lakes: Lake Trahlyta. It's a gentle, slow-paced hike followed by a brisk dip in a mountain lake. So lace up those hiking boots and don't forget your swimsuit and towel!
Georgia's beaches are absolutely beautiful, but in my opinion, nothing beats a dip in a refreshing mountain lake, especially after an exhilarating hike. Vogel State Park's crown jewel is Lake Trahlyta, a picture-perfect reservoir that sits 2,500 feet above sea level. The park is one of the oldest in Georgia, and most of it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1931.
One of the best ways to view the lake is by hiking around it and, conveniently, there's a one-mile loop that takes you around the lake's perimeter. The trail is easy to follow and shaded, making it perfect for hikers of all ages. That said, you'll still want to arrive early to avoid the hottest part of the day, and bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated is always recommended.
There are also a few spur trails you can choose from to make your loop hike into a longer adventure. One of these spurs will take you to Trahlyta Falls, a stunning tiered waterfall that's one of the most scenic in the area.
After having hiked around the lake, you'll certainly be tempted to swim in it. Vogel State Park features a handful of sandy swimming beaches located along the water, and they're perfect for lounging by the water. Kids love splashing around in the lake's calm, cool waters, and all ages can appreciate just how stunning a swimming hole this is. Nothing beats the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains, reflected perfectly in the lake water.
Does this sound like the perfect summer combination, or what? If you're wondering if it's possible to camp at Vogel State Park, the answer is a resounding yes! Traditional campsites are available as well as cottages and more primitive backpacking sites. Making a reservation in advance is highly recommended, so be sure to check out the campground details and start planning your overnight adventure!
Please note: Vogel State Park is currently undergoing construction, so parking may be limited in some areas. Be sure to visit the Georgia State Parks website for seasonal updates and additional details.
