That’s why I’m such a huge fan of remote hiking trails. Sure, it’s always nice to take that loop path many people frequent, but what about those more desolate trails that immerse you in your surroundings? For this unique hiking trail in the Florida panhandle, we’re taking you to Point Washington State Forest, a famous gem known for its outdoor recreational opportunities.
Point Washington State Forest is a protected natural area located in the Florida Panhandle near Santa Rosa Beach.
One of the highlights of this state forest is the Longleaf Greenway Trail - a 14.2-mile out-and-back trail that takes over four hours to complete for most hikers,
Open year-round, the Longleaf Greenway is considered moderate, with a slight elevation change of 200 feet along the way.
As a popular trail for mountain biking, birding, and hiking, keep an eye out for the various wildlife that call this place home. You’re likely to see turtles and tortoises roaming about.
What makes this trailer bit rugged is that it’s a quintessentially sandy Florida trail, which means your calves will likely be getting one heck of a workout.
There is a day-use fee to enter from sunrise to sunset, so make sure you come prepared. Or for anyone with an annual pass for all the state forests, this is accepted here, too.
Depending on the time of year you visit, make sure to keep an eye out for the natural flora and fauna. Some beautiful blossoms pop up along this trail.
