When you’re looking for a fun place to unwind and spend time with the family, parks are a perfect option. For kids, though, the perfect park always includes a fantastic playground -- and many of Detroit’s outdoor spaces are home to play structures galore. The next time you’re seeking an awesome outing that will keep the entire family entertained, look no further than these six spectacular Motor City playgrounds.
1. Riverfront Community Playground (1325 Atwater Street)
As its name suggests, this awesome play area sits just a stone’s throw from the Detroit River and offers kids a perfect place to run off some steam after a day of exploring along the shoreline. While the little ones play, parents will appreciate views of the city skyline and plenty of fresh air. Does it get much better?
2. Kids Row (Central Ave, Belle Isle)
This lovely area consists of a half-acre and sits among plenty of trees and greenery on Detroit’s famous island park, Belle Isle. When you bring the kids here to play, they’ll find everything from slides to swings to fun tunnels. If you’d like to make a full outing of it, check out the on-site picnic area.
3. Bauervic Woods Park (26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield)
Make the short drive to Southfield for a family adventure at Bauervic Woods Park, which features a vibrant playground among the wooded splendor. Take a stroll along the park’s nature trails before letting the kids unwind for a bit on the purple slides, balance structures, and more that make the playground complete.
4. Balduck Park (5271 Canyon Street)
Many Detroiters appreciate Balduck Park for its green space, sports fields, and winter recreation areas, but there’s a playground here that’s also worth checking out. The play area is small but full of excitement for younger visitors, who will appreciate the chance to climb, crawl, slide, and swing the day away.
5. Viola Liuzzo Playground (20087 Winthrop Street)
This underrated and lesser-known playground is particularly beautiful during the warmer months. After all, the surrounding park features colorful flowers, lots of greenery, and lots of space to stretch out. Kids will enjoy spinning on the tire swing, climbing various structures, and running atop the grass, while older guests will appreciate the on-site tennis courts and picnic areas.
6. Oakway Road Playground (Oakway Road, Belle Isle)
In addition Kids Row, this Belle Isle playground brings an extra dash of fun to the island. This particular spot is decidedly unique, featuring a wholly original design that features everything from zipline-inspired structures to a towering lookout attached to a tube slide. No matter what your age, this fun playground might just inspire you to get out there and stretch your legs.
