Valentine's Day is almost here, and if you're looking for something more unique than dinner and a movie, I’ve got the perfect idea. Check out these six romantic hiking trails in Delaware. Whether you're drawn to the coastal views at Gordons Pond or the tranquility of Fork Branch, there’s a trail for every type of couple. Ditch the reservations and embrace a romantic outdoor adventure instead.
1. Gordons Pond Trail, Cape Henlopen State Park
Looking for a Valentine's Day hike with a view? Gordons Pond Trail might be just the ticket. It's a 6.4-mile trek that has some of the best coastal scenery in Delaware. You'll see dunes, beaches, and maybe even some winter birds if you're lucky. There are plenty of spots to stop and take in the view, so bring a thermos of something warm to share. It's popular, but February tends to be quieter, giving you and your partner some space to enjoy the scenery in Lewes.
2. Junction and Breakwater Trail
If you're up for a longer walk, check out the Junction and Breakwater Trail. This 11.1-mile path connects Lewes and Rehoboth, taking you through woods and past coastal marshes. It's a great way to see a variety of Delaware landscapes in one go. The trail follows the former Penn Central Rail Line, adding a touch of history to your Valentine's hike. Pack a lunch to enjoy along the way, or plan to grab dinner or a sweet treat in town after your trek.
3. Prickly Pear Trail, Delaware Seashore State Park
Want something a bit shorter? The Prickly Pear Trail is an easy 3.5-mile loop at Delaware Seashore State Park in Rehoboth Beach. You get a mix of wooded areas and open views of Indian River Bay. The trail is named for the unique coastal cacti that line the sides of the path, a surprising sight in Delaware. It's wide and well-maintained, so you can walk side by side and chat easily.
4. Boardwalk Trail, Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge
For a quick but memorable outing, try the Boardwalk Trail at Bombay Hook in Smyrna. It's just a half-mile long, but it packs in some beautiful marsh views. The raised boardwalk gives you a unique perspective of the wetlands, perfect for a short Valentine's Day adventure. There's artwork from the Delaware Discoveries Trail at the entrance that makes for a nice photo op.
5. Bob Trail, Trap Pond State Park
If you're after a peaceful walk, Bob Trail at Trap Pond State Park in Laurel is worth considering. This 4.5-mile loop circles the pond, with views of the park's iconic bald cypress trees. You'll also pass through hardwood forests and cross a scenic dam, all while taking in the natural beauty around you. The flat terrain makes it easy to unwind and enjoy the quiet, with just the right vibe for a laid-back stroll with your favorite person. It’s a chance to unwind and appreciate the simple pleasures of being in nature.
6. Fork Branch Nature Preserve Loop, Fork Branch Nature Preserve
Headed near Dover and looking for a nice afternoon walk before your dinner date? Check out Fork Branch Nature Preserve Trail, a 1.1-mile loop offering a change of pace from the usual beach trails. Instead of ocean views, you’ll wander through a mature upland forest, the second-largest of its kind in the St. Jones River watershed. It’s a serene and scenic trail that lets you soak in the fresh air, admire the trees above, and work up an appetite for a delicious dinner afterward.
These trails give you a fun alternative to the typical Valentine’s Day plans. Whether you’re enjoying the marshlands or a crisp walk through the woods, Delaware’s romantic hikes are the perfect way to spend some quality time together.
