What's so great about the least visited parks in Connecticut? How about a quiet place with a wealth of natural beauty? Or wide open spaces and marked trails? If that sounds like fun to you, then the Hidden Valley Preserve trails are right up your alley. This is an often forgotten park, part of a much larger collection of preserved woodland. I had no idea it even existed. But honestly, you'll find some of the very best trails at Hidden Valley Preserve.
Hidden Valley Preserve is 650 acres of rolling hillsides covered in trees. But there are also some rocky areas and a number of meadows, making this spot perfect for nature lovers seeking a little escape. And with the variety of Hidden Valley Preserve trails here, you'll never be bored. I've visited in both the winter and the spring, and both were exquisite in their own special ways.
Situated beside the Shepaug River, you can enjoy the pine groves and hemlocks to the peaceful tune of running water. There are certainly some great benefits to being one of the least visited parks in Connecticut. It's easy to forget that freight trains once crossed here.
Since the tracks have been replaced with trails, you will find some of the best trails at Hiden Valley Preserve. There are plenty of quick and easy trails to choose from here, perfect for beginners or folks just looking for a relaxing stroll.
Not convinced that this is one of the most beautiful forests in Connecticut? The Henry David Thoreau Footbridge is a lovely complement to the landscape and makes for a super easy (and handicap-accessible) walking path. I was pleasantly surprised to also find some of the author's quotes inscribed on the bridge. And of course, there's the view of the river, which is extremely beautiful during the fall.
I've visited here twice and neither visit disappointed.
My absolute favorite spot was the Quartz Mine.
You'll know that you are getting close when you start seeing quartz strewn all over the ground.
Or if you're like me, you might miss the sign for the trail and wonder what in the world is all over the ground.
Head down and feast your eyes on the rocks!
Just remember that what goes down must come up!
If you're looking for a little serenity, definitely add the Hidden Valley Preserve trails to your list!
