With Woodland Trails And Beautiful Lakes, James L. Goodwin State Forest In Connecticut Is Straight Out Of A Fairy Tale

We're lucky enough to have many beautiful state parks and state forests in Connecticut. We may be densely populated, but we also have plenty of land that's been set aside for preservation and recreation. One of the Nutmeg State's best natural refuges is the James L. Goodwin State Forest. This magical oasis spans parts of Chaplin and Hampton, and it's absolutely gorgeous. Not only is it perfect for sightseeing and enjoying the relaxation that comes from spending time in nature, it also has plenty of recreational opportunities. Check it out:

The James L. Goodwin State Forest covers 2,000 acres of land in the state's "Quiet Corner," up in the northeast.

The forest is named for James L. Goodwin, who donated his personal property to the state in 1964. He was one of the country's first professional foresters.

This place is so magical! You'll find 17 miles of trails to explore, with areas for horseback riding and cross-country skiing as well.

The 1.5-acre Haley Native Plant Wildlife Gardens contains tons of native plants with informative signs to identify different species.

You'll also find two ponds and a 186-acre lake. Fishing, kayaking, and canoeing are all popular recreational activities here.

The ponds and lake were actually once swamps that were flooded to create larger bodies of water.

The forest has both an on-site nature museum and educational conservation center. Both provide insight into all the plants and animals that call the forest home.

With three square miles to explore, you'll never run out of things to do here.
