If you prefer your hot springs experience served with a side of history, you are going to love the legend that surrounds these popular Colorado hot springs:

Located in southwest Colorado is the charming town of Pagosa Springs and their must-visit Pagosa Hot Springs, which gets its waters from the world's deepest geothermal hot spring.

With temperatures ranging from 87–114°F, the Pagosa Hot Springs are billed as being "23 hot spring mineral pools terraced on the banks of the San Juan River in downtown Pagosa Springs," making them a popular destination for those seeking tranquility.

Aside from 23 pools themselves, what makes these springs so legendary? As per stories and legends, the area's Native Americans were once plagued by a mysterious illness; one that could not be cured by tribe elders nor medicine men.

One morning, after burning a ceremonial fire in search of answers, the Native Americans found bubbling water below the fire embers, which they believed to be a healing gift from the gods.

Thanks to their finding, the tribes began finding much-needed relief, which came from long soaks in these soothing pools.

Translated as "healing waters," Pagosa is still sacred to Native Americans, despite the area being "discovered" and established by American colonists in the 19th Century.
