The History Of Tornadoes In Colorado Will Shock You

As Colorado residents are well aware, tornadoes have been a hot topic the last few weeks:

Over the last quarter century alone, Colorado has seen its fair share of large and destructive tornadoes... but how do we stack up to the other 49 states? Thanks to Tornado History Project, we can take a better look at Colorado tornadoes over the past 65 years and see just how we compare.

According to THP, Colorado saw a total of 2,073 tornadoes between July 1950 - August 2015, which in total killed 5 people and injured 285.

The tornado with the highest number of fatalities (2) took place on June 27, 1960 in Sedgwick County.

On May 20, 1957 a large tornado swept a whopping 70.1 miles, hitting Kit Carson County as well as Kansas's Sherman, Cheyenne, and Rawlins Counties.

One of the more recent Colorado tornadoes was also one that broke records; the EF3 tornado that struck the town of Windsor in 2008 at one point spanned a terrifying 1,760 yards.

What do these numbers mean? And just how do we stack up to other states? According to the National Centers for Environmental Information, the number of average annual tornadoes is a whopping 1,253 -- 53 of which take place in Colorado. Which states have the most?
