The Wicked Awesome Hike In Southern California That Everyone Must Experience At Least Once
Hiking season is in full swing here in Southern California, so it's time to dust off your outdoor bucket list and tackle some of SoCal's most incredible trails.
If you're looking for a hike that offers stunning views, lakefront scenery, and an incredible photo-worthy rock that makes for an epic Facebook or Instagram post (and will make everyone a little bit jealous), then I know just the trail you'll want to take.
The Mt. Woodson Trail in San Diego County is a rewarding 8-mile round trip hike that will leave you feeling accomplished.
There are several places where you can start this hike, but I think the easiest starting point is at Lake Poway Park. The park is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. It's located at 14644 Lake Poway Road.
If you happen to choose another starting point other than Lake Poway, no worries. You'll find ample signage at every entrance point that will make sure you're headed in the right direction for this incredible hike.
All you have to do is follow a few arrows like this one here...
And then this arrow over here, and you'll be good to go.
But for today, we're going to start at the lake and follow an old fire road that will wind around Lake Poway and head straight to the top.
Before you head out on this hike, just a friendly reminder to pack your water. Depending on the season you go on this hike, you may encounter high heat warnings. Please take this seriously and only take the hike if you have plenty of water for both you and your pets as the trail gets hotter than you may realize.
Now back to the trail. As you hike up the hill, be prepared to pass other people on the trail who are just returning from the adventure. Aren't they lucky to be walking downhill!?
If you're wondering why there are so many people on this hike, it's because there's a popular spot called Potato Chip Rock that everyone wants to experience.
It's called Potato Chip Rock because...well...it looks exactly like a potato chip!
If you head out here on a busy weekend you will encounter a line of people trying to capture a photo on this epic rock. So, if there's any way to make this hike on a weekday, you'll get this sweet little spot to yourself.
But something like this is always more fun with a group of people, so make sure to bring along some friends so you can snap some memorable pictures in this incredible SoCal destination.
After you spend some time at Potato Chip Rock, you'll want to make sure you experience the full view that can be enjoyed at the peak of the hike.
You might be tuckered out by the time you reach the top as this is one hike that's quite the workout. So go ahead and kick back, prop your feet up, and breathe in the fresh air. You've earned a break after clocking all those miles.
How's that for a perfect SoCal trail? If you're on the hunt for more hikes in Southern California, here are 11 beautiful trails that offer a little something for everyone. There all so wonderful in their own way that it's almost impossible to pick a favorite on the list.
