The Largest Known Living Tree In The World Is Right Here In Northern California

We Northern Californians are no strangers to gigantic trees, as NorCal is home to many towering redwood forests. But one particular tree dwarfs all the rest, and that's General Sherman, the largest known single-stem tree living today. Here are some incredible pictures you won't believe.

This gigantic tree is 275 feet tall, and the diameter at the base is 36.5 feet.

It's so huge that you'll have an impossible time squeezing the entire thing into one photograph.

These redwood trees are so massive that even a chunk of one tree's trunk will make you feel small.

General Sherman was named after William Tecumseh Sherman, the American Civil War general.

To see General Sherman, there a few different trails you can take. In addition to the Main Trail, the Congress Trail and the Big Tree Trail let you see not only General Sherman but also more of the surrounding forest.

Clearly marked signposts will help you stay on the trail along the way.

While the trails around General Sherman are not steep, they are icy in the winter. Be prepared!

Northern California's General Sherman is one of many redwood trees that the state is proud to show off to tourists.
