We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Most Interesting Hiking Trail Name in Northern California
Visit the Medicine Buddha Loop Trail in the Santa Cruz Mountains for a spiritual hike through the redwoods.
Many use hiking as a way to get their daily steps in, a form of exercise that’s less stressful on the body than running or going to the gym might be. Others, however, look at hiking as a way of connecting with the world, breathing in fresh air, and grounding themselves with every step they take. You can do it for either reason, or both, but what if you were able to take both of these benefits a step further? The Medicine Buddha Loop Trail in the Santa Cruz Mountains is a trail meant to challenge your mind and body, while also promoting healing.
So, why does this hike have such a unique name? Well, in Mahayana Buddhism, the Medicine Buddha is a beloved figure of healing and medicine. His mantra is used to ward off sickness and to help prevent misfortune, and as such, he is greatly revered by many. This includes the owners of the Land of Medicine Buddha retreat in Soquel, California. Here, there are many programs directed at multiple forms of healing and spiritual development. But you don’t need to be a believer to take part in the healing process. The Medicine Buddha Loop Trail is a hike on the property that anyone and everyone is allowed to access.
Open every day except for Saturdays, this hike is 5.6 miles long and takes about two and a half hours to complete. Parking is allowed in the retreat’s lot, but it’s recommended to look ahead of time to see if they are having any events because, naturally, those attending will be given priority for parking. It is considered to be a hike of moderate difficulty, with a gradual incline and multiple areas designed to bring elements of spirituality to the journey. However, although the trail is reasonably well-maintained, there are steeper areas to it, so it is not considered ADA accessible.
Additionally, other hikers do mention how overgrown some areas of the path are, which presents a problem considering that poison oak is very prevalent in the forest. As a result, it is highly recommended that you wear long pants when hiking this trail and if you bring a dog (leashed dogs are welcome), it is suggested that you carry the dog through the areas of overgrown poison oak.
Overall, despite the risks that come with hiking in the Santa Cruz Mountains (poison oak, ticks, spiders, etc.), this hike is considered to be peaceful and beautiful. Redwoods tower above you, with their sparse branches allowing sunlight to filter through, while still providing enough shade to make hiking this trail comfortable in all weather. Small creeks run through the land, and you can spot birds, deer, and the locally famous banana slugs (if you know, you know) all throughout the trail.
So, whether you’re looking to connect with nature or get some exercise in, the Medicine Buddha Trail is available to support both and can give you benefits beyond these desires. Just maybe, you’ll walk along the path and soak in the healing that the Medicine Buddha shares. But perhaps you think that there’s a hike in Northern California better suited to such pursuits?
