There's nothing like strolling through a breathtaking garden to bring back the magic of childhood, am I right? Luckily here in Northern California now that the drought is over, flowers and gardens are not hard to come by. Every once in a while, however, we stumble across one so delightful that we just have to give it special recognition.
The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are located in Fort Bragg between California's Highway One and the Pacific Ocean.
They are comprised of 47 acres of canyons, wetlands, coastal bluffs, and a closed-cone pine forest in addition to the beautiful flowers that are carefully tended here.
The flora to be explored here include species suited to its mild coastal Mediterranean climate and acidic soils. You can find native forests and bluff plants, Heaths and Heathers, Rhododendrons, Camellias, Fuchsias, Dahlias, Magnolias, Maples, Succulents, Begonias and Conifers.
The botanical gardens were founded in 1961 by Ernest and Betty Schoefer. For the first 16 years, they managed it as a private enterprise.
The land is now managed by the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens Preservation Corporation, a a 501-C-3 non-profit corporation, which continues to manage and operate the grounds.
There is an entrance fee to walk the grounds, but it's well worth the price to see some of these lovely varietals and native plants.
Plus, the trails through the gardens take you right to the coast. Your dog is welcome with you on a leash, but please clean up after them.
This stretch of coast is unparalleled for its beauty. Be prepared to be wowed by the contrast of the sparkling sapphire waters with the bright flowers of the gardens.
There's also lots of sculptures scattered through the gardens. You never know what ferocious beast you might stumble on in here!
The gardens are also well loved by birdwatchers looking to spot that rare and elusive species. There have been over 160 types of birds spotted here.
A historic corridor on the south side of the property includes the 19th Century Parrish Family home, orchard and cemetery.
Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens ranks among the best gardens in North America and was just voted 5th "Best Botanical Garden" in the nation by USA Today.
The landscape here is just incredible and should be a must see for all Northern Californians.
