The Pudding Creek Express, operated by the Skunk Train, is a round-trip journey that promises passengers an unforgettable experience of the Pudding Creek Estuary and magical redwood forest. Whether you're a lifelong resident of the area or are simply passing through, you'll love this introduction to the natural landscape surrounding Fort Bragg. Here's more on the train ride that everyone in your family will love.
The Pudding Creek Express is a year-round Skunk Train adventure for all ages. Departing from Fort Bragg, this hour-long trip showcases Northern California's pristine and diverse landscape.
The term "Skunk Train" originated in the 1920s, when crude oil was used to keep passengers warm. Combined with the gas from the engine, the smell reminded locals of a skunk. Fortunately, you won't experience this part of history on today's train!
As soon as the train leaves the station, passengers will embark on the original train route established by the California Western Railroad in 1885.
And while the history is fascinating, it's the natural scenery that will truly impress. Just outside of your window, you'll enjoy beautiful views of the Pudding Creek Estuary, home to blue herons, ospreys, egrets, and other creatures.
Of course, the most iconic feature of this area is the breathtaking redwood forest. Rain or shine, these primeval ancient trees make for an unforgettable setting during the trip.
The entire ride is narrated so that passengers can learn about the natural scenery as they're passing through.
The train won't make any stops, but passengers can stretch their legs and enjoy refreshments at the snack car. Beer, wine, snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase.
There's even an open-air rail car where you can get some fresh air and take in the views.
Equally exciting is the Wolf Tree Turn ride, which departs from Willits.
This two-hour excursion journeys through Noyo River Canyon and makes a brief stop at Crowley, home to the famous Wolf Tree.
No matter your age, you'll find that a scenic train tour through the redwood forest makes for an adventure you won't soon forget.
