The Northern California Sky Will Light Up With Shooting Stars And A Nearly Full Moon This Week

There's a beloved astronomical event occurring this week and you'll want to be sure you don't miss it. Every year, the Perseid Meteor Shower puts on a fantastic show as hundreds upon hundreds of shooting stars light up the sky above us. It's one of the most highly anticipated events for hardcore meteor and star gazers! Although the meteor shower has technically already started, it's expect to peak in just a few days. The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs every summer, yet it never fails to leave us in complete awe. Northern Californians will definitely want to keep an eye out for this stunning event since the meteor shower's peak is expected to happen very soon.

This year, experts predict that the meteor shower will peak in the evening and night between Monday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 13. During the shower's peak, viewers will be able to spot around 15 two 20 meteors per hour.

Usually during the Perseid's peak, it's possible to see up to 60 meteors per hour. However, the full moon is expected to be especially bright and will unfortunately lessen visibility. But don't let that deter you from getting out there and seeing some meteors!

The Perseids that you do see are bound to be just as breathtaking as previous years, and it's a sight that you can't help but love. Although the 12th and 13th are considered the shower's peak, they will continue to be found shooting through the sky until the last week of August.

Although the Perseids are visible all across the Northern Hemisphere, Northern California is an especially wonderful place to see them. After all, the best conditions for viewing meteors are areas that are far away from artificial light, and we have plenty of those.

The best places for stargazing of any kind are the rural areas far from civilization. Head out to one of our state's wonderful wilderness areas or a remote campground—the darker, the better. Additionally, you'll want to be sure to give your eyes plenty of time to adjust to the darkness for maximum effect.

Last but not least, be patient. The Perseids always put on a gorgeous show but waiting for it to start can take time. Once you've picked out your meteor watching spot, simply sit back and wait for the show to begin!
