This Canyon Hike Is One of Northern California’s Most Scenic Trails
Immerse yourself in nature at this fern-covered hike in Northern California's redwoods — the James Irvine Trail is a place you must see to believe.
If you'll bear with me for a moment, I'd like to reflect on a word: diminution. When applied to the self, it describes the feeling of being made small — humbled — by immense forces and grand landscapes. It's the feeling I once had as a little kid, when my family was lucky enough to take a trip to Paris, and I stood in Notre Dame's immense sanctuary, staring up into the lacework of ancient timber that, until recently, supported its iconic roofline.
It's also the feeling I get when hiking in the redwoods, remembering how my aunt once told me that a redwood's bark doesn't begin to twist until the tree is 500 years old. Suddenly, I'm no longer walking through a forest. Suddenly, I'm walking through history.
Among Northern California's trove of spectacular hikes, there are only a few that inspire this sense of awe, of perspective, of being small. The James Irvine Trail — nestled in the heart of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park — is one of them. As you follow its winding path, you won't just pass through corridors of old-growth trees. You'll pass through geological time itself, etched into fern-draped sandstone.
Measuring in at just under ten miles and comprising 1,400 feet of elevation gain, the James Irvine Trail is considered a moderately challenging hike. But don't let that deter you, especially if you're an eager beginner looking to level up your summer adventures. Provided you've carved out the time for a rest stop or two, and you've thought to bring plenty of water and snacks, the trek's only real difficulty is its distance.
Best of all, the meandering path is almost entirely shaded by the dense redwood canopy, cooling the understory even on the season's hottest days. We've all braved one of those exposed, sun-baked stretches of trail, counting down the steps until we've sweated off our sunscreen. Here, protected by the cathedral-like trees, those moments are rare. Though it might be long, the James Irvine Trail doesn't feel like a test of endurance. It feels like an escape into the heart of the forest and a true hidden gem.
This route's real reward is Fern Canyon, a former riverbed now flanked by epic sandstone formations, blanketed in a tapestry of native ferns and mosses. No matter how often you hike the James Irvine Trail, it always feels like a revelation.
Though it’s a popular destination — you’ll likely cross paths with other hikers, especially on weekends — Fern Canyon inspires quiet from its admirers. Whether it’s the canyon’s sheer scale or the sense that you’ve stumbled upon something ancient and secret, the result is a collective, reverent hush. With its emerald-hued walls and cool, misty air, Fern Canyon feels like something snatched from a dream. Without question, it's the crown jewel of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.
One of the greatest gifts time outdoors can offer is perspective — on our impact, our significance, and our place within nature's vast, interconnected systems. If you're in Northern California, there are plenty of places to savor this sense of awe, but one of my favorites will always be the James Irvine Trail in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.
Yes, it's long, but it's also remarkably approachable. Just bring a good pair of boots and your sense of adventure. And the reward for venturing into the heart of it all? The heart of the forest itself: Fern Canyon, in all its lush, otherworldly glory.
