Are you in the mood for a challenge? The Mishe Mokwa trail to Sandstone Peak is exactly what you need. This 6.1 mile hike in the Santa Monica mountains will definitely be a challenge - you'll climb 1,686 feet in about three and a half hours. Along the way, you'll enjoy some incredible views of the valley below, and see some cool features, too. Once you reach the top, you'll definitely feel a real sense of accomplishment. You can do it - let's go!

Find the trail head on Yerba Buena road, about one mile past Circle X Ranch.

From the very beginning, the trail is steep.

The trail hugs the side of the mountain, offering some seriously gorgeous views.

Along the way, you'll see balanced rock across the valley.

After hiking in full sun for awhile, you'll reach a lower, more shady spot.

Take a little side trip to get closer to this Split Rock - a huge boulder with a big split in it that you can actually walk through.

Once you see these steps, you're starting to get close to the peak. Take a deep breath and start climbing!

Make the final push up the side of the mountain toward the peak.

The view from Sandstone Peak is incredible.

Look for the summit register - it's in the little metal mailbox here.

Leave your own note - once these summit registers fill up, the Sierra Club takes them to the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, where you can go view them.

This hike is difficult, but well worth it!

As always, make sure you come prepared for this hike. Bring plenty of water - much of this hike leaves you exposed in full sunlight, and it can get very hot.
