Some bodies of water are filled with many islands. One famous lake that's not known for its islands is Lake Tahoe. The famous body of water spans over 122 million acre-feet and has a larger volume of water than almost every other lake in the country. It's also among the deepest lakes in the United States. You may be surprised to learn that in all that square footage, there's not a single island...except for one. Fannette Island is the only island in Lake Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful places in Northern California. The massive lake is famous for the gorgeous mountains that surround it and the clear blue colors of its water.
Fannette Island has had a number of different names, including Emerald Isle and Coquette Island. It sits on the California side of Lake Tahoe, inside of the stunning Emerald Bay State Park.
The island has a population of zero and only contains the ruins of a single building. The building was a small, castle-shaped tea house commissioned by Lora Knight.
Knight is most famous as the owner of Vikingsholm, the Lake Tahoe mansion constructed in a Scandanavian style. The tea house was built around 1928-1929 and was constructed of locally-quarried granite boulders that were carried to Fannette Island via barges. The simple structure was used mostly for serving tea to Mrs. Knight's guests. Little remains of the tea house today.
Though Fannette Island is not too far from shore, the water is too cold to reach it by swimming, so you'll have to travel there by boat if you'd like to explore.
Camping is prohibited on Fannette Island and dogs are also not allowed.
Emerald Bay was formed when glaciers moved thousands of years ago. It is suspected that Fannette Island was an outcropping of granite that got left behind while the rest of the area was eroded.

Whether you choose to drive, hike, or bike to Jackson Lake, you’ll find a lesser-known fall wonderland and a gorgeous spot to enjoy a seasonal picnic. The landscape surrounding the small lake puts on a simply beautiful display this time of year and it is less than two hours from Los Angeles. There are also great camping spots near the lake so you can revel in the fall beauty a little longer.

Nestled in the San Bernardino Mountains, Green Valley Lake is a secluded hidden gem. The tiny town offers lots of activities to truly enjoy the area’s natural beauty including hiking, biking, and horseback riding, as well as picnic tables and a playground for the kids. You can follow a 5-mile loop around the lake’s shoreline and even bring your fur-baby along for the adventure. The scenic Green Valley Lake Road has even been compared to Vermont in the fall!

In an otherwise arid canyon in the Sespe Wilderness is a wild creek and natural hot springs. Along the water is a riparian outcropping of beautiful sycamore and cottonwood trees that turn bright yellow and gold toward the very end of the fall season. It is truly a unique sight to see.

Peltzer Pumpkin Farm is a family-owned and operated farm offering much more than great pumpkins. Lavender festivals are a beautiful summer tradition, but at the end of summer and well into the fall, this lavender farm hosts the enchanting Lavender Nights. The fragrant purple blooms are long gone but the fields and trees become a magical wonderland illuminated by nearly half a million twinkling lights. Stroll through the rows of lavender and the century-old olive grove. There are lawn games, gorgeous photo opportunities, lavender-infused beverages and sweets, and delicious organic dinner items at the food court and bar - plus a delightful marketplace to shop for unique goods. The atmosphere is complimented by live musical performances every night.
The annual JazzTrax Festival is a spectacular reason to escape to Catalina Island for a weekend. A total of 30 smooth jazz stars will grace the stage of the magnificent ballroom at the Avalon Casino over the course of two weekends in October - a tradition that has continued since 1987. Whichever weekend you attend, consider arriving in time for Thursday’s Unplugged Under the Stars at the Descanso Beach Club. Visiting one of our beautiful botanical gardens is an excellent way to soak in some vibrant fall color, and one of our absolute favorites is Descanso Gardens. Many of the trees change colors with the cooler weather - especially later in the season - and the gardens are populated with beautiful birds, butterflies, turtles, Mallard ducks, lizards, cottontail rabbits, and adorable mule deer. There are many seasonal flowers blooming in fall as well, adding to the color. Admission tickets are quite reasonable ($15 for adults at the time of writing) and Descanso Gardens offers Free Tuesday tickets for the third Tuesday of every month.

Need To Know: There is paved parking at the trailhead. The preserve is over 900 acres and includes a botanical garden and Children's Discovery Center.
